Bevor die USA in den Ersten Weltkrieg eintraten, kämpfen zahlreiche amerikanische Freiwillige in Frankreich gegen Deutschland. Im Jahre 1916 wurde das Geschwader namens "Lafayette Escadrille" ins Leben gerufen, an dem anfangs 38 amerikanische Piloten beteiligt waren.
