Der heranwachsende Sohn Ronald DeFeo Jr. aus dem Örtchen Amityville auf Long Island bei New York erschießt eines Nachts seine gesamte Familie heimtückisch im Schlaf und behauptet bei der Vernehmung durch die Polizei, er habe auf Grund von „Geisterstimmen“, die ihm das Gemetzel befohlen haben, gehandelt.
